The Daffodils of Arkansas

Never had I heard of a festival for one specific flower. Flowers, yes, but for daffodils?

Arkansas hosts this rare daffodil blooming festival at Wye mountain, at the time when the blossoms open. There isn't really set date for the season when the flowers bloom so when they do bloom, the festival date is then announced. As the locals say, 'when the daffodils want the festival to be now, it better be now.'

The festival is but a quaint one. There are no shows, no music, no flashy displays or whatsoever. It's just a community activity of having everyone go around the daffodil-dotted field and enjoy the day. There are no mentions of publicity much, but the festival is slowly starting to gain popularity because of its...quietness.

There are cute little shops around, selling some of the flowers and bulbs. The fields are well tended, as they should be, since they are the pride of the Wye-ans. The field is owned by the local church, and sales would go to pay for the church's needs. It's a nice fundraiser for the town and for the church.

The festival reminds me of the cherry-blossom viewing festival of Japan, where peope just take the time to idle their worries away and enjoy the falling cherry petals in the mid-afternoon. Everyone would share a little bit of something with their neighbors, perhaps a bit of sake', or maybe some tea and some sweets. It's a festival of community camaraderie and brings everyone concerned closer together.

Perhaps if the people had time to maybe, bother with a little bit of entertainment while out in the fields, the festival might feel a whole lot fun. But that's just me. Who knows, probably by next year, they'd have more in store for the tourists who might be interested to visit the area for the blossoming of the pretty daffodils.

If you are going to go to Las Vegas make sure you know what you need to do when you arrive. This is a very busy airport with many flights all day and night. You want to make the arragements you need to get to your hotel ahead of time. I also suggest that you only carry on luggage. If you have to take a cab, you need to know how to save money, same with renting a car.

First of all when you book your flight you should book a pickup at the airport. It needs to be known that the hotels do not offer shuttle service. For no more than $20 per person you can arrange for a round trip shuttle to your hotel from the airport. This is probably the best bet. You can take a bus or a cab, but you are going to probably pay higher prices.

I also recommend if at all possible pack light so you can take just a carry on. Sometimes, especially during peak times, it can take a long time to get your checked baggage. Plus you have to pay a fortune anymore just to check a bag. If you can carry your luggage with you it saves a lot of time, and makes your trip longer.

If you don't listen to me and do take a cab then you need to choose between time and money. You can have your cab driver not take the tunnel, which will save money but take extra time, especially if the streets are busy. You can also have them take the tunnel which is much faster but will cost extra. Your decision weighs on time versus money.

If you decide to rent a car, Fox Rent-a-Cars is the best way to go. They are not on the grounds of the airport, but they will shuttle you to their location. You can save a lot of money doing this over renting at the airport. I strongly suggest you do not rent a car though, it is a lot easier to get around Vegas with public transportation. You dont have to worry about parking, etc. Plus everything is so close together that it really is a waste to drive.

When you are going to Vegas make sure you have a plan on how to reach your hotel from the airport. Advance planning will pad your pocketbook. I say arrange for a shuttle and carry on your luggage. This will save you both time and money.

A Village Within a Festival

The Neighborhood Village is part of the Florida Strawberry Festival, sponsored by the Original Waterless Cookware. Almost everything inside this quaint little exhibit is about homemade items and handicrafts created by the locals of the community.

As with the local's preferences in crafts, there are a diverse amount of differing crafts available in the village. There's baking, cake-decoration, food preservation, home decoration, jewelry and beading (perfect for the kids!) knitting, crocheting and tatting, needlework, quilting, scrapbooks, toys and dolls and clothes designing.

The food category covers the first three, namely baking, cakes and preserves. In Baking, you have cakes, candies and cookies. This is where the locals take pride in their baked goods. Different categories, different prizes. There's cake decoration too, which has reaches on wedding cakes, cup cakes, birthday and holidays. Preserves have almost everything. Jelly, jams, meats and vegetables, fruits, berries; every single thing, so long as it is preserved.

In the decorations category, they have items for home improvement. Pillows, pads, runners, hangings and linens. Jewelry has weaving necklaces, beads, earrings, rings and key chains.

Needlework is a bit more broader. Embroidery, crewel, cross stitching, anything that has string and needle. Quilting is a bit different though, as they are hand-embroidered and have a different category of judging.

You have scrapbooks, whether traditional or digital. These are judged based on design, display, use of material, color and creativity. The contest is strict, and the prize; highly esteemed.

In the toys section, you have toys which are more overall focused on dolls. Bean bags, clothes, houses, teddy bears (quite fond of these). You also have wooden toys, a rarity among collectors nowadays.

The last would be the clothes, most of them would be men and women's wear, children and costumes. Pattern design, style, harmony, color and material are the usual criterions.

There's lots of things to see in this village, so I hope you'll take your time and visit when you drop by the Florida Strawberry Festival.

The Strip or Downtown in Vegas

Recently I visited the wonderful city of Las Vegas. It was my goal to figure out which was the best value, the strip or downtown. It didn't take much, I stayed 2 nights at each place and concluded that Freemont Street was the place to go. It is cheaper, more historical, better to gamble on and you still have easy access to the strip.

Some of the rooms downtown start at $18, try to find that on the strip. Unless you are choosing the Stratosphere which I don't consider being on the strip, you are going to spend a lot more than that. Now at eighteen bucks the rooms are not luxury downtown, but they are accomodating. I don't go to Vegas to be in my room anyway.

Each building has a histroy in downtown Vegas. It was the highlight of my trip to go into all these old buildings and just look around. The buildings have old features such as incredible wood finishes, and features. The setup of the casino's is so different than that of the strip. I will admit they are not the most classy rooms like you will find on the strip, but I liked them anyway.

The meals are so cheap. We stayed two nights on the strip and two nights downtown. On the strip I ate at what I thought was a horrible restaurant for $90 per person. We then went downtown, and one night I had prime rib which was excellent for under ten bucks. We even had steak and eggs which was also excellent for just $4 per person!

We gambled downtown and thought it was a blast. First of all the slots pay more downtown than on the strip. I was teaching my girl how to play blackjack which is my game at the casino. The dealers were even helping her learn, telling her which move to make, etc. On the strip they wouldnt have said a word to her. I was even talking for an hour or two to a pit boss getting tips. Try doing that on the strip.

Lastly, the strip isnt that far away. They actually have a bus that is $7 per person per day that will take you back and forth from downtown to the strip. So if you want to see the luxurious hotels, shows and gamble on the strip you can easily get there by bus. You can also take a cab for about $20 for a whole group.

So my conclusion is that you should stay downtown at Freemont Street. I will visit the strip, but I don't see why it is so expensive.

Bread Festival

I had no idea the bread world was far too extensive and more complicated than what I have thought bread to be.

So, I had chanced upon this druidish fair when my nose picked up the sweet scent of fresh bread. My guess would have had to be oats or barley added to the mix. You could smell the grains popping from the heat of the brick oven. And lo, I was right!

There is this annual bread festival somewhere up north. It was a rare occasion (it was an annual event, around Spring when the ground smelled of fresh growing grass) and the people dressed up like those of the olden days. But they had so much flour and wheat going around. And when you have too much flour, the next logical thing to do would be to make bread out of it. They had allowed people like me to their festival, and it was joy for me. You could rarely experience the sight of bread being made, baked in a brick oven and immediately allowed for tasting when it has cooled down a bit.

I got a hold of an herby bread immediately. I could smell the pepper, the dill, and cinnamon from inside my mouth. Cleared up my sinuses there too. That bread packed quite a punch. Needless to say, it did not escape me, as I had devoured the whole thing with much fervor. The couple just gave me an amused look, and I had the courtesy to turn red. It was a funny experience.

They had meat pies too, though not the same as we city-folks have it. It's still inside the whole bread, so you really get a full meal. And there was lots of different types. I really did not venture trying each and every bread, but I went for the safest I could think of: turkey. So there I sat and ate. The turkey seemed...wild. Or something, I really can't tell. Probably wild, since I never had wild turkey before. If the thing in the groceries count anyway. Others took to pork or mutton.

The Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas

During my recent trip to Las Vegas I stayed at the Mirage Hotel. This hotel is owned by the MGM company. The property is decorated beautifully and is worth the money. My stay was perfect. I would say that if you are going to book this property, however, just pay for the standard, don't go for the upgraded room unless you are getting suite. Check out the Secret Garden while you are there.

If you are choosing this property don't pay the extra money for the room with the jetted tub on floors 24 and 25. The tub is nice, but the rooms are much smaller than the standard room. I would say you have about a 25-50 percent chance of a strip view, but I think they charge extra for that.

The Secret Garden is a habitat for white tigers, a white lion, and dolphins. I believe the admission was around twenty dollars per person. It is a really neat thing to see. You get up close to the animals, and never have I seen a place where the trainers are so friendly and will tell you everything about their animals. Right now they have five tiger cubs and 2 baby dolphins.

The hotel decor is that of tropical destinations. They have palm trees and such through out. The also have a Beatle's nightclub called Revolution that is neat. They have many stores within the hotel in case you need to shop. They are located right at Center Strip which gives you easy access to everything. There is a liquor store across the street that will save you money on buying drinks. There is also a Volcano show but we had no time to see it, we did see the Pirate show next door at Treasure Island.

I give this hotel a thumbs up, or five stars. If you want to stay in a good location on the strip, the Mirage should be one of your options. Like I said though, just book the standard, I think it is more of a value when it comes to space.

Now, trying to get back home, he is aided by a cat named Mittens, and an overweight hampster named Rhino.

THE CHRONICALS OF NARNIA, PRINCE CASPIAN: It is one year later, in "real" time, when Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are teleported back to Narnia. Fearing for his life Prince Caspian has blownn the magic horn, hoping to be saved. In Narnia, 1,300 years have passed since they were Kings and Queens, but the four legendary characters have be summoned back to save Narnia from the evil Telmarines. With the support of the brave warriors of Narnia, they will fight for the future of Narnia.

WANTED: Wesley Gibson is about to learn that the father he never knew, is a contract killer. His father has been murdered, now Wesley is asked to join into the organization that his dead father was involved with. He now will become the killing expert that that he was destined to become. After that, everything becomes complicated, and many twist and turns follow. Hang on to your seat.

THE DARK KNIGHT: In this film Batman, and law enforcement officials, have been taking down the criminal elements of the city. Crime is now down, until a new criminal mastermind shows up, and starts a crime spree. Now, Batman really has his hands full, as the Joker is dispensing his criminal plots on the big city.

TWENTY ONE: The basis for this film is the actual tale about M.I.T. students who built a team of blackjack winners. This team of blackjack players prepared and then enacted a brilliant run at the blackjack tables. To beat the games in Vegas, where card counting can get you banned, they had to change casinos often, and disguise themselves, so the wouldn't get caught. This movie is based on the best selling book that explains how these kids made millions playing blackjack.

10,000 B.C.: This movie takes us back to prehistoric times. When a warlike tribe invade the Yaghai tribe, they capture, among others, Evolet. A strong young hunter, D'Leh, who is in love with her, leads a group of hunters to pursue the warlords, and save her, and the rest of the captured tribe members.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS: Wild and crazy nights in Las Vegas are normal. Barely remembering what had happened, Jack and Joy wake up to discover that they are married. They wind up winning a large jackpot at the slot machines, but each thinks they deserve the prize, so they try to settle it in court. It is decided that they must stay together for six months, and give their marriage a chance. With an eye on the jackpot, they each try to get the other to give up, as both desire to have the cash for themselves.

WALL-E: This film is an animated, comedy, adventure, sci-fi. Mankind has left Earth, since it had become a pile of rubbish. Wall-E, a trash collecting robot, is assigned to continue cleaning. When a recon bot (Eve) appears, checking for any signs of life, Walle-E has a friend. When Eve is retrieved by the spaceship that sent her, Wall-E sneaks aboard, and starts an incredible adventure.

Alaska, too, has festivals of its own right. Every state does have one. Alaska has its Alaska Folk Festival which is held every spring, in the good month of April, when the air has absorbed the warming rays of the sun

The event is free; there is no admission fee, any charge for concerts, the dances or any other event. It's an event of humanity for the folks around the state. Everyone is encouraged to join and be a part of the event. Novices, amateurs, professionals and experts are welcome, and there are no auditions whatsoever. The Alaska Folk Festival is an open event for people of any age. It is usually visited by most people from around the country and around the world.
